Given Staten Island’s demographics, it should come as no surprise that borough dogs bear the names of Yankee legends, Republican presidents and a savory smorgasbord of Italian foods.

In general, though, the most common dog names on Staten Island are also the most popular ones throughout New York City.

Six of the top 10 male and nine of the top 10 female dog names on Staten Island also ranked among the top 10 male and female dog names citywide, according to Health Department dog licensing data.

Bella is the most common dog name on Staten Island. As of Feb. 1, 137 dogs licensed in the borough were named Bella, almost twice as many as Molly, the borough’s second most popular female dog name.

The battle for the top male name is much closer. For now, the title belongs to Buddy (100 dogs), but Max (97 dogs) and Rocky (86 dogs) are not far behind.

Below is a list, compiled using Health Department data, of the most popular male and female dog names on Staten Island in 2015.
